About Madrid
Best Time to Travel
Despite being miles away from the sea, Madrid experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) have the warmest and most pleasant weather. While the middle of winter (January-February) is very cold, the weather is very hot in June and August.
Transport
Madrid has a fantastic (and air-conditioned) metro and a network of buses that connect everywhere a visitor might visit, including the airport. 10-way tickets are 12.20 euros (1-way tickets are 1.5 euros). For longer journeys there are Cercanias suburban trains and national Renfe rail services. Taxis are plentiful and provide a safe and relatively inexpensive way to get around.
Things to Know Before You Go
Business hours have undergone significant standardization in the last 10 years for almost all major cultural institutions and many large retailers, where late and long Spanish lunches (2 to 5 p.m.) no longer exist. But small independent shops and offices still close in the middle of the day, and virtually all shops are closed on Sundays and national holidays.

Madrid Airports
Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport
While the airport was opened in 1928, it has grown to become one of the important aviation centers of Europe. Located within the city limits of Madrid, the airport is located only 9 km from the financial district of the city and 13 km northeast of Puerta del Sol, the historical center of Madrid.
Land Transportation
RailwayMadrid Metro Line connects the airport to the city center with the Nuevos Ministerios station in the heart of Madrid's financial district. Barajas Line 8 provides rapid transportation to the center of Madrid from the underground stations of Terminal 2 (access to T1 and T3) and Terminal 4. The metro also offers connections to the Spanish rail network. The first flight in the morning departs from Nuevos Ministerios at 06.05 and arrives at Terminals 1-2-3 at approximately 06.20 and Terminal 4 at 06.25.
EMT Bus
EMT (Madrid Municipal Transport Company) provides regular public transport bus service between the airport and Madrid (Avenida de América station). Bus number 200 first drops off passengers at departures at terminals 1, 2 and 4, and then comes in reverse and collects passengers at arrivals, making a full circuit. EMT's night bus service N4 (nicknamed “Buho” meaning Owl) runs from Madrid city center (Plaza Cibeles) to Barajas (Plaza de los Hermanos Falcó y Alvarez de Toledo, 400 m from the airport and via the toll road on the highway) carries passengers. EMT also operates express buses from Barajah airport to Renfe's Atocha station, Madrid's main railway station, during the day and to Plaza Cibeles at night. Unlike the two services mentioned above, these lines operate 24 hours a day, all days of the year.
Airport Parking
Long and short-term car parking is provided in seven public parking lots at the airport. P1 is an open space car park in front of the terminal building; Indoor car parking with access to terminals P2, T2 and T3. There is a Parking 'Express' facility at Terminal 2 for short term only and 1,655 local long term parking spaces are also available. Shuttle buses provide service between the long-term car park and all terminals. There are also VIP car parks.
