Chicago Airports

O'Hare International Airport

Chicago O'Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD) is an international airport located on the Far Northwest Side of Chicago, Illinois. Chicago city center is located 27 km northwest of the Loop. This is the main airport serving the Chicago metropolitan area. The other secondary airport is Midway International Airport, located 10 miles from the Loop. The airport is operated by the City of Chicago Aviation Authority.

O'Hare was the world's busiest airport by number of takeoffs and landings in 2001. As of September 2014, O'Hare provides direct service to a total of 210 destinations, 153 of which are local destinations in the USA and 57 of which are international destinations in North America, South America, Asia and Europe.

Today, O'Hare is used as a headquarters by American Airlines and United Airlines. It is also the destination city of Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, while local airlines Air Choice One also use it as their headquarters. It is the second largest passenger hub in the United States after Houston's George Bush International Airport, with 15.3 million passengers annually, and the largest airport in the United States by number of daily flights, with 585 flights per day.

Transport

Rail Transportation

While the Blue Line provides transportation between O'Hare and Forest Park, it leaves the underground station and connects to Terminals 1, 2, and 3 via walking tunnels. The station was opened on September 3, 1984. Trains operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provide transportation to Forest Park via Chicago city center.

Metro

The commuter train from Metra North Central Service stops at O'Hare Transfer Station, which is connected to the Airport Transit System by line buses. Trains run only on weekdays.

Airport Express

The city of Chicago is working on a plan for an express train line that would take tourists, locals and other travelers from downtown to O'Hare International Airport in 20 minutes. This will cut the Blue Line's travel time in half. If the express train is built, single-trip tickets will cost about $30 to $35. Less expensive monthly cards or family discounts will also be available.

Vehicle

Vehicles enter and exit the airport via I-190, which branches off at I-90 (Kennedy Expressway) and reaches the city center. It is also possible to reach the airport by vehicle from the east side via Mannheim Road. All airport traffic is carried out from the east side, except for cargo access on the south side of the airport. Local people sometimes call I-190 the world's biggest dead-end road due to its one-way access.

Taxi

Transportation to Chicago O'Hare Airport can also be provided by taxi and limousines. Fares may vary depending on traffic, but the average fare from O'Hare to downtown Chicago is between $30 and $40.

Bus

Local buses depart from and arrive at the Bus/Shuttle Center, carrying passengers to and from Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. It is located on the ground floor of the Main Parking Lot and is accessible via pedestrian tunnels from Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

Waiting Area

The waiting area can be accessed from the Bessie Coleman car rental lot off I-190. Signs direct drivers to the new Waiting Area. Half a mile north from the car rental places across from Bessie Coleman, information signs provide up-to-date information on arrivals.
