About San Francisco

Best Time to Visit San Francisco

Visit San Francisco in September or October when the weather is quite nice and there are fewer crowds. Come in July or August to catch festivals and events. Spring is also a great time to visit, but in the evenings the fog settles with cool ocean breezes. The annual Bay to Breaker's race, held each May, sees 75,000 runners and walkers in a variety of costumes (and some in birthday suits) complete the 4.46-mile route. This event is also the biggest (lively) party in the city.

San Francisco Transportation

There are neighborhoods on the east side of San Francisco that you can walk if you don't mind going up a bit of a hill. Using the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) metro system, you can travel quickly and affordably from downtown to the Mission District, SFO or the East Bay. Regular minibuses offer an easy way to get around the city. Taxis, Uber and Lytfts are also quite common.

San Francisco Weather

September is the warmest month with an average high of 21 °C. January is the coldest month with an average maximum temperature of 14 °C.

What You Need to Know Before Visiting

In this city, weather changes are instantaneous and microclimates create variable weather patterns in the hilly terrain. Locals know to pack a few extra layers (a scarf and a light jacket will come in handy) before heading out. The morning may be sunny, but you never know when the city's mascot, Karl the Foggy, will arrive.

San Francisco Airports

San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco International Airport (IATA: SFO) is an international airport located 21 km south of the city center of San Francisco, California, USA. The airport is also near Millbrae and San Bruno in unincorporated San Mateo County. While flights are made to many points in North America from here, it is also an important gateway to Europe and Asia.

SFO is the largest airport in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Northern California, and the second busiest airport in California after Los Angeles International Airport. In 2014, it was the seventh busiest airport in the United States and the twenty-first busiest airport in the world by passenger numbers. It is United Airlines' fifth largest hub and serves as United Airlines' primary gateway for transpacific flights. It is also the operational base of Virgin America. The airport, which is the maintenance center for United Airlines, also hosts the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum and Library.

Land Transportation

AirTrain

AirTrain is the airport's passenger transportation system. This system, which is completely automatic and free, connects four terminals, two international terminal garages, the BART station and the airport's Car Rental Center.

Railway

BART

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) BART station is located in Parking Garage G of the international terminal and is the only rail connection between the city of San Francisco and the airport. Pittsburg/Bay Point – SFO/Millbrae line trains stop at SFO station.

Caltrain

BART is SFO's only connection to Caltrain from Millbrae Station. A transfer is required at the San Bruno station during BART weekday operating hours. There are direct flights between SFO and Millbrae on holidays, weekday evenings and weekends. Caltain was previously provided with free shuttle buses from Millbrae station to SFO airport. When the extension of SFO was completed, this service was replaced with BART.

Bus

San Francisco Municipal Railroad, San Francisco's transit agency, does not provide service to the airport. But SamTrans, the San Mateo County transit agency, provides five lines, 140, 292, 397, 398, connecting KX airport to downtown San Francisco, the Peninsula and as far south as Palo Alto. More detailed:

Line 140 provides local service from the Car Rental Center (accessible via AirTrain) to San Bruno, South San Francisco, and Pacifica, with stops at Bruno Caltrain, San Bruno BART, and Skyline College for connections to San Mateo County and beyond.

Line 292 passes through Bayshore Boulevard and the center of San Mateo and provides transportation between the airport and San Francisco and Hillsdale Mall.

Line KX, a commuter line, operates direct flights to the airport from Redwood City during the day and from San Francisco at noon and in the evening.

Line 398 provides transportation to the airport when Line KX is not operating and operates between San Bruno BART and Redwood City Caltrain. This line operates daily.

Line 397 provides transportation to the airport on a “night shift” basis at night in the Bay Area. This route is identical to Line 292 north of the airport (with an additional stop at the Civic Center BART/Muni Metro Station), and the route continues south to Palo Alto Caltrain via the Millbrae BART/Caltrain Station and El Camino Real.

Vehicle

The airport is located on US Route 101 and 21 kilometers south of San Francisco centre. It is also near US 101 and Interstate 380, which connects US 101 with Interstate 280.

The airport offers both short and long-term car parking services.

Short-term car parking is located in the central terminal area and two international terminal garages. Long-term parking is at South Airport Blvd. and San Bruno Ave. and transportation is provided by ring buses.

Passengers can also park long-term at some BART stations with a permit they have previously obtained online.

Taxi

Taxis depart from areas designated for taxis on the arrival/baggage claim floors of all terminals.

Shared ride services (transit heavy companies) like Lyft and Uber are available on their mobile apps and can be accessed from their designated seats in the departures (not arrivals) section of each terminal.
