Beijing Airports

Beijing Capital International Airport

Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA: PEK) is Beijing's main international airport. The airport is 32 km northeast of the city center and is located in Chaoyang District and the surrounding Shunyi suburb. The airport is operated by and owned by the state-owned Beijing Capital International Airport Company Limited. The PEK code given to the airport by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) originates from the fact that the name of the city was formerly written as Peking in Latin letters.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main hub for Air China, the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China, which flies to 120 destinations (excluding cargo) from Beijing. China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines also use this airport as a base.

Beijing Capital added Terminal 3 in 2008 for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. It is the world's second largest terminal after Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 and the world's sixth largest building by area. Beijing Capital International Airport covers an area of 1480 hectares.

Beijing Capital has risen rapidly in the rankings of the world's busiest airports over the past decade. In 2009, it was Asia's busiest airport by passenger traffic and total mobility. It has also been the world's second busiest airport by passenger traffic since 2010.

Land Transportation

Transportation within the Terminal

Terminal 3 consists of three areas. Both domestic and international passengers register through T3C. For domestic flights, gates are located at T3C and T3D (for Air China domestic flights only). International flights are operated by T3E. The 2 kilometer journey between T3C and T3E has been reduced to 2 to 5 minutes with automated vehicles.

Transportation Between Terminals

Transportation between Airport Terminals 1/2 and 3 is provided by free inter-terminal buses. Buses depart every 10 minutes between 06.00 in the morning and 11.00 in the evening, and every 30 minutes between 11.00 in the evening and 06.00 in the morning. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected to each other by long corridors.

These destinations include Xidan, Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South Station, Beijing West Station, Zhongguancun, Fangzhuang and Shangdi, along with eleven airport bus routes. Airport buses operate to all three terminals and a single ride costs 16 yuan. Airport buses only accept paper tickets, which are sold at terminals and certain bus stops in the city.
