Lisbon is one of the sunniest capitals in Europe. The best months are between May and August, when food and music festivals take place almost every week, the city's sun-shiny beaches look like a postcard, and Lisboêtas flock to the bars and restaurants. Although Lisbon can be quite crowded throughout the year, hotel prices drop significantly from November to February, and the weather remains warm, making it an ideal time for budget-conscious visitors.
For a European capital, Lisbon is very organized and a city made for walking, especially in the cinematic neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto. Lisbon's public transport is operated by Carris (tickets/day passes $2/$6.68) and includes buses and Lisbon's historic trams, funiculars and elevators. The Metropolitano de Lisboa (tickets start at $1.56) operates the city's subway system. Taxi and Uber are pretty common – after all, there are a lot of hills in the city.
January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 11 ºC. July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 24 ºC.
Lisbon's famous artistic stone pavements, called casçada potuguesa, look beautiful but can be quite dangerous as they are slippery - make sure your shoes have good grip and save your heels for Paris and Milan. And always have cash on hand – most of the city's bars, restaurants and shops only accept Portuguese plastic, known as Multibanco.
