Located in the north of the Aegean Region, the district is located on the Çanakkale - İzmir highway, 8 km inside the Edremit Bay. It is 135 km away from Çanakkale and 200 km away from Izmir. The district, which is a trade center, contains many products, especially olives and olive oil.
When we look at the history of Edremit, we encounter many old names. Old Edremit, which came under the rule of the Lydians, was restructured by Adremis, the brother of the Lydian King Croesus, and bears his name. B.C. Old Edremit, which we encounter in both periods, came under the rule of the Persians, Delolus, Alexander and Romans respectively. In 600 AD, large ships were being built in the shipyards of the district, which was the center of the judicial organization. The people of the district, who were attacked by Selçuk Sultan in 1076, dispersed to the surrounding areas. In 1099, the district and its surroundings fell into the hands of the Byzantines. Turkish raiders have to fight a three-pronged war to take the district. Yusuf Sinan, the leader of the Turks, took the key to the city and had a mosque and bath built here. This mosque is Kurşunlu Mosque. Edremit shipyards were also important in the Ottoman Period, and ships were built with timber obtained from the Kaz Mountains. Many heroic sailors were trained in Edremit, which also played an active role in the capture of Lesbos Island. On September 9, 1922, Edremit gained full independence.
When we look at the climate characteristics, we see a Mediterranean climate. While the winter months are generally warm and rainy, the summer months are hot and dry.
Olive oil is the crown jewel in Edremit dishes. The people of Edremit, who can never give up olive oil, have been using only olive oil in their meals for years. The district, which is close to Izmir and Çanakkale, has been influenced by the culinary culture of these provinces as well as Balıkesir cuisine. Some of its appetizers are also famous throughout Türkiye.
When we look at Balıkesir cuisine in general, höşmerim, Ayvalık toast, Susurluk ayran and Balıkesir Kaymaklısı are the most famous foods and drinks.
Other local dishes of Balıkesir are; Chicken ravioli, tirit, keskek, garlic, fish and seafood, kapama, metez and black-eyed peas.
Antandros Ancient City is one of the must-see places in Edremit. It is a very old city located at the foothills of Mount Ida. Another place worth seeing when you go to this city is Mount Ida. This mountain is located in the north of Edremit Bay.
Another place to visit in Edremit Bay is Kazdağı (Mount Ida) National Park. In this park, located between the Aegean and Marmara Regions, there are hundreds of different animal and plant species.
When we look at the mosques and churches, there are Kurşunlu Mosque and Ayazma Church.
Beaches and thermal springs: Altınoluk, Akçay, Güre thermal springs, Derman thermal springs and Entur thermal springs.
Sıdıka Erke Edremit Ethnography Museum is also among the places you should definitely see.
