Boston Airports
Logan International Airport
Logan International Airport (IATA: BOS) is an international airport located in the East Boston neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, USA (partially in the town of Winthrop, Massachusetts). It covers 2,384 acres and has six runways, four passenger terminals and employs approximately 16,000 people. Logan, New England's largest airport with a total of 33.5 million passengers in 2015, is also the 18th busiest airport in the USA.
Land Transportation
Boston Logan International Airport was named the “Easiest Airport to Reach” in an article published on aviation.com in 2007 because it offers so many options for departures and arrivals. These options include cars, taxis, MBTA Blue and Silver lines, regional bus services, shared minivans, ferries, limousines, and services offered by US Airports and Logan Express. Logan is located 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of downtown Boston, a very short distance compared to airports in other cities.
Roads and Toll Highways
The airport can be reached from the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) Exit 26, near the eastern terminus, which provides access to the west via the Ted Williams Tunnel. I-90 bypass east of Exit 26, Route 1A, to Lynn and New Hampshire. From the south, passengers can connect east to the Masspike via Interstate 93, the Ted Williams Tunnel, and the airport via Exit 26. From the north, I-93 uses Callahan Tunnel, Route 1A North, to reach the airport. There is transportation from the North Shore via Route 1A South. Central Boston, Back Bay and Fenway/Boston University traffic should also use the Callahan Tunnel. The twin tunnel coming to Callahan Tunnel from the west is known as Sumner Tunnel. Passage in the tunnel to the east is free, to the west there is a fee of 3.5 dollars, and for taxis there is a fee of 5.25 dollars, which passengers must pay.
Public transport
Massport's Airport Shuttle provides free transportation between all terminals, the airport station on the Blue Line, the car rental center and the port on Harborside Drive.
Massport's Logan Express buses provide transportation to Braintree, Framingham, Peabody counties and the Anderson Regional Transportation Center in Woburn. Adult one-way fare is $12, while round trip fare is $22 per passenger. The Logan Express also provides transportation to Boston's Back Bay neighborhood and stops at the Hynes Convention Center and Copley Square. One-way fare is $7.5 for passengers and $3 for MBTA card holders. Logan Express operates from the ground floor of all terminals.
Limousine and taxi
It is also very common to use a limousine at the airport. Limousine drivers are not allowed to leave their vehicles while dropping off or picking up passengers, although this varies depending on the terminal.
Terminal A is located on the arrivals floor, outside the baggage claim area, in a small parking lot across the road. For Terminal B, limousine drivers wait for their passengers in the parking garage on the lower level of Terminal B. In Terminal C, passenger reception is located on the departure floor, on the second and third island from the building. In Terminal E, passenger reception is located in the parking lot at the corner of the arrivals floor. For public safety, there is a $500 fine for each call to a customer by any transportation company anywhere on airport property.
Taxis are coordinated by Massport at each terminal. According to Massport regulations, taxis are prohibited from picking up passengers outside the designated pick-up areas in Terminals A, C and E. On both sides of Terminal B, shuttle minivan shuttles, limousines and taxis are available downstairs in Terminal B's parking garage. Signs inside Terminal B direct passengers according to the type of vehicle they will board. There is a taxi pool next to the Güney Cargo complex, where nearly 400 taxis are waiting, and taxis are called in groups of 5 or 10 after waiting for about 90 minutes or more.
Taximeter fares between Logan airport and hotels vary between 23 and 35 dollars. A $2.25 airport fee applies to all taxis leaving Logan, which is entered on the taxi meter by the driver. For taxis leaving the airport via Sumner Tunnel or Ted Williams Tunnel, the Harbor Tunnel Highway fee is also added to the taxi meter. The total fee/toll ($7.5) is displayed on the right side of the taxi meter and is automatically added to the meter fare (shown on the left of the taxi meter) when the taxi reaches the passenger's destination and stops.
pocket parking
Logan International Airport offers a 30-minute pocket waiting area at the intersection of Hotel Drive and Service Road. It's free and about a five-minute drive from each terminal. This service prevents blockages and pollution at the airport.
Car Rental Center
The 120,000 square feet, $310 million car rental center was opened on September 24, 2013, gathering all car rental companies under one roof. Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty car rental companies operate out of the new building and there is 3,200 parking spaces. Transportation to the new building is provided by Massport's clean fuel hybrid buses and provides transportation between all terminals and the car rental center.
