The city, which was a Portuguese colony for more than 300 years, is home to mixed cultures. There are historical Chinese temples along the pavements paved with traditional Portuguese stones. The streets ring with the pronunciation of Portuguese names in the Cantonese dialect. You can eat Chinese "congee" for breakfast, and taste Portuguese delicacies 'caldo verde' soup and 'andbacalhau' for lunch. For dinner, you can try 'minchi' (minced meat, pork or beef served over rice) from Macau's hybrid cuisine.
On the Macau Peninsula, you'll find the old city center, where colonial ruins juxtapose with new artistic boutiques. Further south are the interconnected islands of Taipa, Cotai and Coloane. Taipa features perfectly preserved Macau architecture. Cotai is home to new mega casinos, and in Coloane colonial villages line up with beautiful beaches.
