Visitors to the island can’t help but stand in awe at their first sight: the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in pristine white marble. An architectural masterpiece of immense proportions, it has 82 domes,1000 pillars and space for up to 40,000 worshippers. It is a premier example of modern Islamic architecture and was both the grand vision of late president Sheik Zayed bin Sulta Al Nahyan and his final resting place.Blending influences from Mamluk, Ottoman, Fatimid and Indo-Islamic architectural styles with the more contemporary, the mosque has involved the work of artisans across the globe. The result is an awe-inspiring landmark of superlatives. Not only is it the largest mosque in the country, it also lays claim to the following: the largest mosaic in the world, biggest carpet and the third-largest chandelier with a whopping 11 tonnes of dazzling Swarovski crystals and 24-karat galvanized gold.Fortunately for many, it’s also one of the few mosques in the country in which non-muslims are allowed to enter. However, do remember to respect the mosque etiquette by wearing long, loose-fitting, ankle-length pants or skirts, long sleeves and a headscarf for women.
